Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

The announcement that Tom Cruise is working on a deal to play Jack Reacher in the film adaptation of One Shot (Delacorte, 2005), the ninth book in the series by Lee Child, has the movie blogs going nuts (Reacher is described in the books as 6’5″ and 250 lbs).

The movie site Deadline quotes Lee Child himself on the subject, “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.”

One Shot is the ninth novel in the  Reacher series. The next title, #17 in the series is The Affair, (Delacorte, 9/27).

Oh, Please… I didn’t just read this, did I??? No way is Cruise Jack Reacher. Period.

  3. Jene Says:

There is no way I can see him as Jack Reacher.

  4. Carole Says:

    Jack Reacher = Tom Cruise

  5. Elizabeth Says:

This is sacrilege. I can’t think of a single Jack Reacher fan that I know who would be happy with this.

  6. Chris Says:

Absolutely not! I have always pictured Jack Reacher as more of a Jason Statham-type.

  7. Kris Peters Says:

Little Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? Don’t care how big his personality and ego are, he is NOT Reacher.

  8. Sue Says:

Jack Reacher? Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? You gotta be kidding me! In an alternate universe maybe … where nobody reads.

  9. Lois Says:

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher – pathetic!!!

  10. Joanne Says:

My dog, Mick, would make a better Jack Reacher!

  11. Abby S. Says:

That would be horrific casting on every level. Reacher’s physical presence is a big part of the series.

  12. Ginger Fetscher Says:

I would rather see Reacher dead than portrayed by that little snippet.

  13. Lois Says:

Tom Cruise is NO Jack Reacher

  14. Mickey Says:

    Please nooooooo! That’s just ridiculous!!!!

  15. Janet Says:

NO! PLEASE — NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! It’s simply not enough that Tom Cruise wants to be Jack Reacher. He is not, no way shape or form, Jack Reacher-like.

Hold out, Lee Child, for a real Reacher. Do it for your fans. I can’t imagine enjoying another Reacher book if the idea of Tom Cruise as Reacher is taking up space in my head.

I can’t think of a less appropriate match. His size is important, from his past especially. The film will have to be done with smoke and mirrors.

  17. Deb Says:

Agreed. I’ll have to boycott this series – Tom Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher!

Lee Child is quoted as saying that Jack Reacher’s size is a metaphor for an unstoppable force.

I think casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in a film adaptation is a perfect metaphor in itself. Over 90% of film adaptions are hollow shadows of their original books; as such they significantly diminish the original material. Because of that, I rarely bother to watch them.

We should be thankful for their honesty in casting Tom Cruise. It lets us know right away that this movie won’t live up to its original source and we shouldn’t even bother to waste any time or money on it.

It’s sad that we’re all so bummed by this very bad casting of a beloved literary character, but these comments are making me laugh! (“Beloved” doesn’t sound quite right for Jack Reacher, but I think he must be, by the reaction…)
