FROZEN RABBI/Warm Welcome
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010In yesterday’s Washington Post, Jess Walter calls The Frozen Rabbi by Steve Stern, an “exuberant new novel…packed to bursting with epic adventure and hysterical comedy, with grim poignancy and pointed satire.”
Earlier, the San Francisco Chronicle quoted Gordon Lish,”the renowned editor and literary kingmaker,” who calls Stern, “far and away the greatest of our unrecognized writers.”
Anyone who knows Mike Rackliff, head of library marketing at Workman, has heard him rave about it.

HIGH FINANCIER Author Hits the Media
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010Niall Ferguson is known for his 2008 best seller, The Ascent of Money. His new book High Financier, a bio of Siegmund Warburg and how his economic principles could have prevented the current global economic crises, releases tomorrow.

Ferguson has emerged as a major critic of economist Paul Krugman, who supports economic stimulus. He discussed his views yesterday with Tom Ashbrook on NPR’s On Point.
He also stepped out of his role as an economist to comment on General McChrystal’s critism of the President’s handling of the war in Afghanistan in Rolling Stone article on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
As a result, his book, which was regarded by PW as a weak bio of a largely-forgotten figure in British banking, rose to # 126, from #7,111 on Amazon’s sales rankings yesterday. Libraries we checked are showing holds of 1:1 on light ordering.
The On Point with Tom Ashbrook web site features the following rap about the schism between two schools of economic thought; John Maynard Keynes and F. A. Hayek (whose 1944 book, The Road to Serfdom rose to #1 on Amazon last week and continues at #7 today, because of a passionate endorsement by Glenn Beck).
Book Sections Are Not Dead
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010In the midst of all the bad news about book coverage in newspapers, there is at least one bright spot.
The blog GalleyCat just posted a job listing for a books editor for NPR.org, saying, “According to our sources, the organization is working on building up the books section…”
NPR.org’s books section already rivals many newspaper’s; we look forward to an even stronger one.
Scott Turow’s Favorite Thriller
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010To mark the first day of summer, NPR began a new book series, “Thrilled to Death.” All summer long, they plan to invite thriller writers to talk about books they love.
The series on All Things Considered last night with Scott Turow, who reached back to his 40-year-old copy of Graham Greene’s The Power and The Glory, a book he “would have simply died to write.”
It rose to #102 on Amazon, from #4,751, as a result.

THE RED BOOK On View in D.C.
Monday, June 21st, 2010If you’re going to D.C. this week, you have a rare opportunity to see Carl Jung’s The Red Book, which will be on view in a special exhibition, at the Library of Congress (Mon, through Sat, 8:30 to 4:30 p.m.)
In the book, Jung chronicled in words and drawings his own hallucinations during a mental breakdown. He considered The Red Book the wellspring of all his works, but it was locked away in a vault until last year when it was sent to New York for public viewing and Norton published a facsimile. It was also featured in the New York Times Magazine.
The following spread is from Norton’s catalog.

A Big Thank You…
Monday, June 21st, 2010…to Carol Fitzgerald, co-founder and President of the Book Report Network. She’s a strong believer in libraries and has written an impassioned letter urging authors and readers to join her in advocating for library funding by participating in the Library Advocacy Day Rally on June 29th from 11AM-12PM at Upper Senate Park, in Washington, D.C., writing to legislators, sending Op-Ed pieces to local newspapers and finding out what support local libraries need.
Procrastinator’s Guide to ALA
Monday, June 21st, 2010Like many of you, I rely on John Berry’s preview of ALA conference to help me find my way through the approximately 2,000 programs and meetings going on. I was in a bit of a panic, because I couldn’t find it on the new on the LJ Web site (ah, the challenges of transitioning to new servers; I am totally sympathetic). Found it in the nick of time.
Also, Cindy Orr at the Readers Advisor Online blog has a great rundown of Readers Advisory programming.
Of the listings, I want to give a special shout-out to Neal Wyatt’s brainchild, the RA Research and Trends Forum. This year, the topic is visual narratives, examined in several formats; love the idea of mixing together video games, graphic novels and illuminated manuscripts.

Rob Reiner’s FLIPPED
Monday, June 21st, 2010Fans of both Rob Reiner and YA author Wendelin Van Draanen have been eagerly awaiting Reiner’s movie of Van Draanen’s novel, Flipped.
Reiner has changed the contemporary setting of the novel to the late ’50s and early ’60s. The story is about the love/hate relationship between two eighth graders; you can’t help but think “Stand by Me meets When Harry Met Sally.”
In an interiew in USA Today, Reiner credits his 16-year-old son Nick, for introducing him to the book.
The movie set will open in most theaters on August 27; it will open in a limited number of theaters in early August.

JAN’S STORY CBS Sunday Morning
Monday, June 21st, 2010How does Alzheimer’s affect the spouse of one of its victims? Reporter Barry Petersen delved into that story in a very personal way on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday. His wife, Jan Chorlton, once a reporter for CNN, ABC and CBS Sunday Morning, began showing symptoms of the disease at 40. Now 60, she lives in an assisted living facility.
Petersen has also written a book, Jan’s Story, which went to #38 on Amazon sales rankings after the show. The book was not reviewed prepub and libraries we checked have not ordered it.
