‘Bonnet Novels’

Earlier this summer, the AP wrote about the growth of Amish-themed books in the Christian fiction category.

Today’s Wall Street Journal examines the phenomenon in a different light; how the Amish community feels about these books by “Englishers” — people outside the faith. While some are fans, others feel the books “present a distorted, soap-opera version of Amish life.” Says one critic, “Buggy accidents, and romances between Amish youngsters and outsiders, are … far less common than the books suggest.”

The story focuses on Cindy Woodsmall, author of the Sisters of the Quilt series (from Random House’s Christian division, Waterbrook Press) and also mentions Beverly Lewis (Bethany House) and Wanda Brunstetter (Barbour Books); both were covered in our earlier post.
