Holds Alert: HALF THE SKY

A new book detailing the oppression of women, Half the Sky, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, rose to #78 on Amazon over the weekend. It’s also showing heavy holds on light ordering in several large libraries (as high as 40 on six), with a few showing no orders.

An adapted excerpt from the book, “The Women’s Crusade“, was the lead article in the New York Times Magazine‘s special issue, “Saving the World’s Women” (8/23).

Kristof, a columnist for the New York Times and his wife, WuDunn, a former NYT reporter, are the first married couple to win a Pulitzer for their coverage of Tiananmen Square.

According to today’s NYT review,

In this passionate yet practical book, the authors argue that the struggle for gender equality is ‘the paramount moral challenge’ of our era.

How to get people to care about these issues? They use the journalist’s method of,

…focusing on three problems that offer moving individual narratives: forced prostitution, honor killing and maternal mortality. Along the way they introduce the evidence of other deprivations.

And present “Gripping stories of individual women.”
