Algonquin’s effort to expand the readership for Mudbound, recently available in trade paperback, appears to be working (indeed, the publisher says they are nearly out of the 30,000 initial print run); it hits the NYT paperback list at #32. It’s been on the Indie list for 3 weeks, reaching a high of #16 on the most this week. In hardcover, the book was on the Indie list for ten weeks, reaching a high of #20, but didn’t cross over to the NYT list.
Bookseller Boswell Books (Milwaukee, WI — a new bookstore, taking over one of the old Harry W. Schwartz stores; the new owner is Schwartz’s former general manager) presents an interesting rundown on how Algonquin is marketing the paperback, and also offers insight into how much more contact booksellers have with publishers than librarians do.

Kellerman makes small departure, moving the Delaware/Sturgis investigative team to the sidelines, and focusing on a new team, stepbrothers who made a brief appearance in last year’s Bones. Prepub reaction varied widely. PW dismissed it as “routine,” while Booklist found it refreshing to see “Kellerman step outside of the all-too-familiar he relies on in the Delaware novels and introduce a couple of characters that have the potential to take his work in fresh directions.” LJ object to the writing “…usually neat and not overly burdened by extraneous detail, [it] fails to move the story along, as is the case with the unsympathetic characters. The conclusion is too easily wrapped up as well. Public libraries should see demand for this best-selling author, but readers who are not already fans probably won’t take notice.”
