Julie & Julia, the Movie

Trailers for most of the summer movies based on books are available and linked in our “Books to Movies — Trailers” section,  but we’re still waiting for the one for the Nora Ephron-directed Julie & Julia, based on the 2005 book by Julie Powell, starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child.

For those unfamiliar with the book, Julie Powell writes about the year she cooked her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking as therapy for a dead-end job. The book spent five weeks on the  extended NYT Hardcover Nonfiction list.

The movie was just previewed at ShoWest, the movie biz trade show, and reports are fairly good. Meryl Streep plays Julia Child and Stanley Tucci her husband Paul Child. Evidently, Child gets more scenes in the movie than she does in the book, where Julie occasionally imagines Julia’s life in France. The Web site, CinemaBlend says, “Meryl Streep, predictably, is great as Child,” but felt the sections about Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams are “traditional chick-flick stuff, and Adams’ rampant adorableness actually makes it seem even more irritating.”

So, what, exactly, is the problem with chick flicks?

In a good bit of timing, Julie Powell’s second memoir is coming out just before the movie, which releases August 7th. This one also combines food and self-therapy;  she learns how to butcher as a means of recovering from an unfortunate love affair.

Since the movie also follows Julia Child’s life through her memoir, My Life in France, it’s a good opportunity to bring that book out of the stacks. Those who saw the preview say the relationship between Meryl Streep as Julia and Stanley Tucci as Paul is one of the movie’s strengths.
