Sonny Mehta on Stieg Larsson

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo  by Stieg Larsson is currently at #23 on Amazon sales rankings. It ranks higher on B&N.com’s list, where it is at #7, perhaps because “B&N Studio” features a video of Sonny Mehta, publisher and editor-in-chief of Knopf, describing his enthusiasm for the book.

Mehta notes that Larsson, in addition to being “an enormously gifted and crusading journalist,” was also a book reviewer, whose “passion was crime writing…[which] he read voraciously.” The book is “peppered with references to his peers in the crime writing community…it takes you back to Agatha Chrisite or Dorothy Sayers.. He’s like a magpie that way .. and that is part of the pleasure, to me, of reading him.”

The book is reviewed today  by the Washington Post crime reviewer, Patrick Anderson. Reviews have been sharply divided on this one. Anderson comes down on the positive side;

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has been a huge bestseller in Europe and will be one here if readers are looking for an intelligent, ingeniously plotted, utterly engrossing thriller that is variously a serial-killer saga, a search for a missing person and an informed glimpse into the worlds of journalism and business.
