USA Today (and EarlyWord) Loves ‘Dewey’

Our favorite fall book is Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron. We’re not the only ones; USA Today is solidly behind it as well (although, ah hem, we spotted it first).

Back in June, months before publication date, USA Today included it in their “Book Buzz” column. Then they used the book’s jacket as the illustration for their Fall Books Calendar. Today, they feature the book which comes out on Wednesday, and the author (the recently retired Director of the Spencer, Iowa Public Library) saying,

Many people in publishing think Dewey could do for cats what Marley (the misbehaving yellow Lab of best-selling Marley & Me fame) did for dogs. Marley‘s success unleashed a pack of canine imitators in bookstores.

Personally, I think it will also do a great deal for libraries, since Myron’s library embodies the public service values that make libraries a vital part of their communities.

We asked Vicki Myron if she’d like to speak directly to fellow librarians on EarlyWord. She responded immediately, saying,

In this book, you will discover what we all have in common — a love of knowledge, the passion to unite our customers with information, and real human contact in an age of technology and computer isolation. I wanted the library be be warm and friendly, the center of our community’s heart, and to prove that community analysis is always vital and relevant, wherever we work. Dewey helped me do that and allowed me to get that message out to the world with his personality and fame. By the time he died at age 19 years and eleven days, he had accomplished what I couldn’t alone — he had built a world-wide image for library cats and brought the name of Spencer Public Library to the lips of people all over the globe.

According to the USA Today story, CBS Sunday Morning will feature the book this week. Dewey’s story is the kind that CBS Sunday Morning does particularly well (reminder: they got the buzz going for Angela’s Ashes). It’s a good time to consider buying more copies.
