NYT BR for Sunday, 9/14

This Sunday’s NYT BR cover review is The Forever War by Dexter Filkins, reviewed by Robert Stone. He calls it “stunning.” The book was included in the Washington Post, New York magazine and USA Today fall book previews.

The libraries I checked have it on order in modest quantities. An audio version is available from Books on Tape, which few libraries have ordered yet.

The biography of San Franciso Giant’s coach, The Genius by David Harris is considered “exemplary” by NYT BR editor Gregory Cowles,

Harris, a journeyman author whose previous books include a history of the National Football League, has written the rare biography that lives up to its subtitle’s lavish claims.

Libraries have ordered it in small quantities, with few reserves so far. It was selected as a major fall title by the Washington Post, USA Today and the San Francisco Chronicle (of course).

Many are wondering whether the international bestseller Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will translate to U.S. bestsellerdom. The NYT BR review won’t do it much good, saying “…if the middle section of Girl is a treat, the rest of the novel doesn’t quite measure up.”  The Chicago Tribune saw the book quite differently, saying it’s “like a blast of cold, fresh air.”

Libraries are showing comfortable holds to copy ratios so far. Few libraries have ordered the audio edition.
