Alan Ball on Terry Gross

The HBO series, True Blood, about vampires struggling with their natures, set in a tiny southern town, began last week. Towelhead, a movie about an Arab-American girl struggling with her developing sexuality, set in Houston, opens in select theaters today.

As different as they sound, both are directed by Alan Ball, creator of HBO’s Six Feet Under and writer of American Beauty, the 1999 movie starring Kevin Spacey. Both are also based on books.

Ball appeared on Fresh Air with Terry Gross this week, offering fascinating insights into the threads that connect his work.
