‘In Hovering Flight’ is #1

The number one title on the September Indie “Next List” is from independent publisher, Unbridled Books. The Indie Next List (formerly the ABA BookSense List) presents the favorite titles chosen by independent booksellers from titles being published in a particular month. The books are included in special store displays and on independent booksellers’ web site.

The title voted #1 for September is In Hovering Flight by Joyce Hinnefeld. Montgomery AL bookseller Cheryl Upchurch describes its appeal;

…the story of a couple, Addie and Tom, a bird painter and a bird scientist, of their romance and marriage, and of their only daughter, Scarlet. In lovely but precise language Joyce Hinnefeld slowly reveals the larger world and the more intimate landscapes within it. This is a remarkable first novel and a unforgettable story.” –Cheryl Upchurch, Capitol Book & News Company, Montgomery, AL

Unbridled’s Web site shows dozens of enthusiastic responses from other booksellers. Publishers Weekly, called it a “provocative and page-turning debut novel” (the author also wrote a book of short stories, Tell Me Everything and Other Stories).

Only one of the nine libraries I checked has it on order (congrats, Seattle!).

The annotation from the publisher’s catalog give a handle on the plot;

At 34 years of age, Scarlet has come home for the passing of her famous mother, the bird artist Addie Kavanaugh. The year is 2002. Though Addie and her husband, the world-renowned ornithologist Tom Kavanaugh, have made their life in southeastern Pennsylvania, Addie has chosen to die at the home of her dearest friend, Cora. This is because their ramshackle cottage in Burnham, Pennsylvania, is filled with so much history and because, in the last ten years or so, even birdsong has seemed to make Addie angry, or sad, or both. These are the things that Scarlet needs to understand. Cora and Lou (the third woman in Addie’s circle) will help Scarlet to see her mother in full. In addition, Scarlet carries her own secret into these foggy days-a secret for Addie, one that involves Cora, too. Joyce Hinnefeld’s debut novel is rich in so many ways beyond the taut mother-daughter dynamic and the competition among even the closest of women. The natural world, an artist’s vision, the intensity of long-lasting love, the flight of a bird’s song and the sighting of an extinct-or perhaps illusory-small creature all work to shape the plot of the novel.

Unbridled Books was founded five years ago by publishing veterans Fred Ramey and Greg Michalson. The name was selected to “designate a publishing venture that is both energetic and independent.” The company has had remarkable success with bookseller recognition, garnering three #1 Booksense/Indie Bound titles (particularly noteworthy for a publisher that releases only 10 to 12 books a year).
