If you were at Midwinter, or any of the recent AAP Book Buzzes, you
know that the big news of the year for Algonquin is the emergence of
new imprint, Algonquin Young Readers. In fact, I think it’s fair to say
that this is the most exciting library oriented development at
Workman, since I landed here!

In particular, I’m over the moon about SOMEBODY UP
THERE HATES YOU
. Come find out why, when I speak at
the AAP Book Buzz during ALA (Saturday 2:00PM in
room S104B).

9780761171768There in spirit will be Sandra Boynton,

signature brand of humor. We’ll have a limited number

Remember that huge tome, THE LOUVRE, replete with
searchable DVD? How about THE VATICAN: All the
Paintings (as well as illuminated manuscripts,
sculpture, tapestries, & more?

There’s great history, courtesy of The New York Times, a sequel to UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIPS, and the usual great fiction from Lee Smith, and other Algonquin authors, and even some nonfiction from the likes of Alice Hoffman.

Another book we’ll be featuring in the booth that has my juices going
Jurassicparkis from Knopf’s acclaimed book
designer, Chip Kidd (a legend, going
back to his iconic JURASSIC PARK
jacket). Based on the premise that we
are ALL graphic designers, in what we
do in our daily lives, it’s nearly an all-
ages book.

In fact, Chip’s been invited to lecture
about the book, at the oldest art
college in the country! If it’s
sophisticated enough for them (and it is) it’s sophisticated enough for
anyone. You might think about your Maker Space, as well.

While in the booth, don’t forget to ask me about our daughter Mara’s new titles. This year she’s gotten three (count ‘em, three) awards:

o Golden Kite Award for the best written picture book, from the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators
o Ezra Jack Keats Honorable Mention
o Charlotte Zolotow Honorable Mention

Am I proud of her? Well, What do you think?

Untitled-1Speaking of which, I can’t resist sharing this bit, about her daughter (and my granddaughter), Cassidy. Her parents have painted her room with purple walls. The girl likes purple!

Cassidy says that she will put up photos of movie stars.

“Like whom?” sez us. “Una Merkel” sez she!

You’ve got to love it! This is one apple that didn’t fall too far from the grandparental tree!

Cheers,
