‘What Color Is You Parachute?’ 2009 edition

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

New to the Wall Street Journal bestseller list is the 2009 edition of the evergreen title, What Color is Your Parachute? Most libraries I checked do not have it on order yet. Given today’s unemployment news, you may need to buy more copies than usual.

  • Paperback: $18.95; 407 pages
  • Publisher: Ten Speed Press (October 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 1580089305
  • ISBN-13: 978-1580089302

Oprah’s Favorite GYN

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

The media has already taken note of the fact that even an Oprah re-run can put books back on bestseller lists.

This was proved again this week, when You: Staying Young zoomed from a very respectable #349 to #5. What Oprah rerun aired yesterday? Yup; “Dr. Oz on Aging, How to Turn Back Time.” Library reserves shot up, too.

Last week’s rerun of a show with another Oprah regular, Dr. Christiane Northrup, sent her book The Wisdom of Menopause, up Amazon’s list to #21. The second edition of this title was released in 2006, but many libraries still own the 2001 edition. Given the number of changes in thinking about menopause, I wondered if that edition should be a candidate for withdrawal. I checked with the publisher, who provided this information on the updates:

The 2006 edition includes new information from the massive Women’s Health Initiative Study published in 2002. That study caused millions of women to abandon Prempro and other synthetic hormones. The new edition also includes information from another study released in early 2006 on the cardiovascular effects of HRT.

Other specific new features in the revised and updated edition include:

  • Programs for enhancing sexuality and breast health and the reasons why sex can get better after menopause.
  • Nutritional approaches to preventing osteoporosis and heart disease.
  • Why maintaining a healthy insulin level is key to women’s health.
  • The latest research on breast cancer and what you can do to prevent it.
  • New ways to avoid hysterectomy, including innovative fibroid treatments.
  • Understanding the hormone replacement controversy, how to take hormones safely, and a wealth of alternatives.
  • New information on how to prevent dementia.

Rather than rely on old editions to help fill demand, it’s time to get rid of them and replace them with the new edition (the publisher says there are no immediate plans for a third edition).

The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change, 2nd Edition

Christiane Northrup

  • Paperback: $20.00
  • Publisher: Bantam; 2nd edition (October 31, 2006)
  • ISBN-10: 0553384090
  • ISBN-13: 978-0553384093

“Sales Bible” Tops Amazon List

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

As the Barbara Walters media blitz continues this week, her memoir Audition has risen to #1 on the Amazon bestseller list.

But, for a while yesterday, the new edition of a more prosaic title, The Sales Bible, was at #1. Two of the libraries I checked have received their copies, three show on order status and six only list the 2003 edition. It is currently at #4 on the list.

The Sales Bible New Ed: The Ultimate Sales Resource
by Jeffrey Gitomer

  • Hardcover: $29.95
  • Publisher: Collins; New edition (May 6, 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 0061379409
  • ISBN-13: 978-006137940
  • Audio CD: Unabridged, $39.95
  • Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio, (May 6, 2008)
  • ISBN-10: 0743572661
  • ISBN-13: 978-0743572668

HarperCollins’s expectations for this title are high — the announced first printing is 250,000 copies. Below is the description from Harper’s site:

Since its initial publication in 1994, Morrow’s hardcover edition of Jeffrey Gitomer’s THE SALES BIBLE has sold over 117,000 copies, and another 100,000 in paperback (published by Wiley).

But in the 13 years since then, Gitomer has made himself into a sales powerhouse with huge success around an inventively packaged series of books, with his classic THE LITTLE RED BOOK OF SELLING at its heart.

Now at last, Gitomer has taken the title that began it all, and has completely revised it. The Sales Bible is totally reworked to fit into his line of bestselling sales titles. It’s sure to be THE must-have title for sales professionals worldwide who’ve already come to know and trust Jeffrey’s inventive, irreverent sales wisdom through his “Little [Color] Book of…” series.
