On THE DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

David Cross, who was on the TV series, Arrested Development, appeared on the Daily Show last night to promote his book, I Drink for a Reason. As a result, it rose from #3,001 to #101 in Amazon sales rankings. Libraries are showing one to one reserves on modest orders.

You won’t learn much about the book from this interview. Publishers Weekly said that Cross is “one of the few comedians working today with an easily identifiable comic voice, and his authorial debut ensures that his voice is heard on every page. Mixing bitterness and absurdity, the result is often piercing sarcasm.”

Wild about WILD THINGS

Monday, August 17th, 2009
Back in June, when we first reported on the publishing surrounding Where The Wild Things are, we were under the impressio
This week’s story, “Max at Sea,” is taken from your forthcoming novel, “The Wild Things.” The book is loosely based on the screenplay you and Spike Jonze wrote for the film “Where the Wild Things Are,” which, of course, is based on the book by Maurice Sendak.
I thought it would be fun to do an all-ages expansion on the screenplay. And after a few years of working on the script with Spike, we had a lot of pages and ideas that wouldn’t fit into the actual movie; a script is about ninety pages, and even then, they’re ninety pretty sparse pages. So I went into the novelization thinking it would be a place to put all these passages and scenes that wouldn’t fit into the movie. And I did end up using a few of those scenes. But while I was working on the book, it was funny, because I started going in new directions, different from any of the screenplay versions, pushing it into some territory that was personal to me. So in a way the movie is more Spike’s version of Maurice’s book, and this novel is more my version.

More news is coming to light about Spike Jonze’s movie of Where The Wild Things Are. The full trailer (as opposed to the “teaser trailer” we posted back in April) is now flying around the web.

The movie was originally scheduled for last year, but according to reports, Warner wanted it to be changed substantially (in tests, it scared kids). It will be released in its original form on Oct. 16. We haven’t heard how that came about, but it’s not hard to imagine that the formidable triumvirate of director Spike Jones, author Maurice Sendak and screenplay writer Dave Eggers managed to face down the studio.

To see a larger version, go to the movie Web site. Also on the site is a video “featurette” of Maurice Sendak talking about how much he admires Jonze’s version of the book. Sendak says it will be controversial; as Dave Eggers says, Spike was interested in “re-fagging” the book, which was controversial in its own time, rather than talking down to kids.

There’s also more information on the Dave Eggers’ tie-in, Wild Things, which is a longer version of the story for 9- to 12-year-olds. This week, The New Yorker features a short story from the book, “Max at Sea.” In an online interview on the New Yorker site, Eggers says the book is different from the screenplay, pushing the story “…into some territory that was personal to me. So in a way the movie is more Spike’s version of Maurice’s book, and this novel is more my version.” He also talks about the fur-covered edition (yes, it’s fake fur).

Stephenie’s Summer Reading

Monday, August 17th, 2009

On her blog today, Stephenie Meyer reports on the books she loved this summer.

She gives the highest praise to Catching Fire, the already eagerly-anticipated follow-up to Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games, coming out in two weeks. Says Meyer, “It not only lived up to my high expectations, it surpassed them.” Holds are heavy in many libraries.

She also gives kudos to Elizabeth Knox’s two-book series, Dreamhunter and Dreamquake.

Books to Watch For Next Week

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Here’s an early jump on some titles going on sale next week that we’re likely to be hearing more about (for more titles, check B&N.com’s Coming Soon section).

Phillippa Gregory returns with The White Queen, about Britain’s wars of the Plantagenets, with a more cinematic jacket look than usual for Gregory (perhaps influenced by huge success of the tie-in to the film of The Other Boleyn Girl). People heralds it this week with 3.5 of a possible 4 stars,

…Gregory’s lush detail and deft storytelling are all in top form here, making The White Queen both mesmerizing and historically rich.

Libraries we checked showed high reserves on orders of up to 56 copies. This is the first of a planned trilogy.

Gail Parkin’s debut novel Baking Cakes in Kigali is an Indie Next pick for September. Set in Rwanda, it features a woman who finds healing after the losses of her two grown children, as we mentioned in an earlier post. Libraries we checked are showing modest reserves and under 10 copies on order. This could be a sleeper.

Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater by New York Times food critic Frank Bruni gets a B+ in Entertainment Weekly. Libraries are showing modest reserves on modest orders. Our guess is that it’s likely to get enough review attention to change that.

I Can Has Bestzellers

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Can the world get enough of lolcats – those pictures of cats doing something cute with cheekily misspelled captions that are as ubiquitous on the web as cat hair in a cat lover’s house? There’s already one book, I Can Has Cheezburger, which is available in 167 libraries according to World Cat. And now a second book is coming in September: How to Take Over Teh Wurld: A LOLcat Guide 2 Winning.

This weekTime magazine features the company behind icanhascheezburger.com and over 20 other related sites. Perhaps we shouldn’t be giving it more attention; one librarian told us that EarlyWord was the first site she checked every day. After we mentioned icanhascheezburger.com, we were demoted to #2.

NYT Hardcover Fiction – 8/14

Friday, August 14th, 2009

On this week’s New York Times bestseller list, Sherrilyn Kenyon lands in the #1 spot with Bad Moon Rising, her eighth title to achieve that position, according to her website. However, libraries are not so high on her – those we checked have only 12 -48 copies, with holds ranging from 34 to 123.

That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo rises to #2, helped by intense review coverage and some critical controversy, as we mentioned in an earlier post. Libraries we checked have received their orders (from 29 to 206 copies), and show substantial holds (from 200 to 250).

Kathleen Stockett’s debut novel, The Help, rises to #3. We’ve written about the book several times, but libraries we checked still have heavy holds (from 107 to 595) on anywhere from 64 to 129 copies. Given the demand, and the book’s upward trajectory (last week it was at #4) perhaps it’s time to order even more (libraries have been steadily adding copies, but demand continues to outstrip supply). It’s a long wait for the paperback; scheduled for release February 2, 2010.

Holds Alert: WEIGHT OF SILENCE

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

How many times have you handed the Writers Digest to hopeful authors, knowing that the odds are stacked against them? Take heart, sometimes that act can lead to a bestseller.

The Weight of Silence, an original trade paperback, landed on the NYT Trade Paperback bestseller list at #7 last week. The momentum is continuing; it moved from #35 to #29 on this week’s USA Today general list. According to the author’s hometown Dubuque, IA, paper, the author, Heather Gudenkauf, found her agent through the Writers Digest (we’re willing to bet it was a library copy).

A year and a half later, Harlequin’s Mira imprint fell in love with it. They loved it so much that they gave it a level of promotion that they rarely do for a first novel. Others got on board; BookReporter.com made it one of their “Bets On” titles, Borders put it in their “Make Books” program, and independent booksellers chose it for the August Indie Next list. To catch some of the excitement, read Carol Fitzgerald’s rave in BookReporter.com; it sounds like a perfect RA and book club title.

Libraries are showing heavy holds on modest ordering (it had a strong, but not over-the-top review in Publishers Weekly).

Mira has also bought the author’s second book; the working title is The Foundling Wheel.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Makes Bestseller Appearance

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of Civilization of Love by Carl Anderson and Eduardo Chavez has remained in Amazon’s top 100 over the past week and now appears at #137 on the USA Today list.  The book traces the ways that the Catholic Virgin has been a catalyst for relgious and cultural transformation from the sixteenth century to the present. None of the libraries we checked had any copies.

The book’s rise is clearly tied to Anderson’s role as chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Knights of Columbus – the world’s largest Catholic organization. Our Lady of Guadalupe was prominently featured at the first international Marian conference and the Guadalupe Festival - attended by thousands in early August in Phoenix, Arizona – both of which came on the heels of the 127th Annual Knights of Columbus convention.

Co-author Chavez is an expert on Guadalupe apparitions and the first Dean of the Catholic University Lumen Gentium of the Archdiocese of Mexico. He and Anderson created a video for the book, hosted on their website.

The Obama Book Club

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

President Obama’s gotten caught reading by the press fairly consistently since May 2008 - though more often during the campaign than during the first six months of his presidency. Rather handily, the Daily Beast has recapped his reading picks, which shows “a predilection for presidential profiles, a weakness for explain-it-all bestsellers, and the occasional hankering for literary fiction.”

There are 12 entries so far – that’s a year’s supply of reading for enterprising book clubs!

More Fall Movies Based on Books

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Previews of the fall movie season are on their way; Entertainment Weekly‘s arrives on stands and the Web tomorrow (with New Moon on the cover, of course).

ew-cover-1061_l

This upcoming season features even more major movies based on books than last year. We’re tracking 27 titles based on books, graphic novels, or, in one case, a short story, arriving in theaters between September and Christmas.

Links to the available trailers are on the right (under “Books to Movies — Trailers”).

We’ve also added two new listings:

  • In Production — titles that are currently filming (such as Eat, Pray, Love, starring Julia Roberts, which is currently tying up traffic in my Brooklyn neighborhood) or scheduled for filming.
  • Announced — titles that are in development. It includes some that may be “Lost in Production,” reminding us that the journey from buying rights to a film appearing in theaters is often incomplete.

Below are titles we’ve added recently to the fall list (for complete list, check Scheduled — with Tie-ins):

You’ve got to check out the trailer for The Informant; here’s hoping the movie lives up to it.

More Michael Jackson Books in the Hopper

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

USA Today announces that a new, heavily-illustrated book about Michael Jackson is coming in December, priced at $165. The first title sanctioned by the estate, it is published by Kraken Opus, a UK-based publisher of titles that often go for $2,000 or more.

Originally planned to include Jackson’s London concerts, the company was still in negotiations with Jackson when the singer died. The book will be published on Dec. 7 and is now available for pre-order through TicketMaster.

Also coming, is an October reprint of Jackson’s book, Moonwalk. According to Robert Hilburn, who says he worked on the first version of the book, Jackson wasn’t pleased with the final version and blocked the publisher from reprinting it after the initial printing of 500,000 (via GalleyCat).

Original 1988 editions are being offered on Amazon for $85 to $675.

On Amazon, the publisher’s note says that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Shaye Areheart (who now has an imprint under Crown; Harmony, the publisher of the reprint, is also an imprint of Crown) were Jackson’s original editors.

New Movie of Anne Frank

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

In her forthcoming book about Anne Frank, Francine Prose makes the case that neither the 1959 Broadway play nor the subsequent movie of The Diary of a Young Girl, come close to accurately portraying the Anne of the book.

David Mamet is set to take a new shot at it. Variety reports that Disney has acquired the rights for a new version of the The Diary, with David Mamet writing and producing. Variety says the film will be based on both the diary and the 1959 stage play. Co-producer Andrew Braunsberg spent a year getting rights from the various estates involved.

What will be different? Variety says “Mamet brings his own original take on the material that could reframe the story as a young girls rite of passage.” One of Prose’s objections to the earlier versions is that they don’t show Anne’s growth as either a person or an artist; “On the pages, she is brilliant, on the stage, she is a nitwit.” She also points out that they attempted to “universalize” the story to broaden it’s appeal; few mentions are made of the family’s Jewishness and Anne was made to seem more hopeful. Says Prose about the movie, “She sounds like an American girl. And why not? It’s an American movie.”

Mamet has written about anti-Semitism in his book The Wicked Son: Anti-Semitism, Self-hatred and the Jews, Schocken, 2006. He also criticized the movie Schindler’s List for exploiting the Jews (Salon, Oct 24, 1997), so it’s very likely that he will bring a new view of The Diary.

When we will see the results is another question; Mamet is directing his new play, Race, which opens on Broadway in November.

Meanwhile Francine Prose’s book, one of the librarians’ picks of BEA, is a passionate fan’s analysis of the book and how it has been perceived through the years.
