Questioning Work

Monday, May 25th, 2009

The current most-emailed article from the NYT is “The Case for Working With Your Hands,” by Matthew B. Good, an essay in the NYT Magazine, which is adapted from the author’s book, Shop Class as Soulcraft. The book, which has been rising on Amazon, as we noted last week, jumped from #73 to #32 as a result.

It is also featured in the June 1 issue of Newsweek, along with Alain de Botton’s The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work.

Fresh Take on ‘Shop Class’

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Maybe the times are right for a new Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. A good candidate just might be Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford, which has risen to #77 on Amazon with the help of a recent review in Slate. No libraries we checked had copies on hand, though several had some on order.

Crawford finished his doctorate in political philosophy at the University of Chicago, took a job at a Washington think tank, then quit five months later and began repairing motorcycles. His defense of the satisfactions and security of having a skill that can’t be exported overseas, done with an algorithm, or downloaded – and his thoughtful critique of cubicle culture – was published as a much-discussed essay in the New Atlantis in 2006, before he landed a book deal with Penguin Press.

Calling Shop Class as Soul Craft “the best self-help book that I’ve ever read,” the Slate reviewer characterizes Crawford’s advice this way: “Strive not for flimsy new economy “flexibility” but for real, handy expertise in a chosen field. The point is to achieve mastery, which in turn gives you a skill not subject to the whims of office politics. Finally, think about how your work affects others. This is a hedge against both narcissistic creativity and doing actual harm.”  That’s not a message you hear every day.

Romance Fans Rejoice…

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

…someone has just joined your ranks.

Back in March, the women behind the web site Smart Bitches, Trashy Books worked hard to talk NPR’s Rebecca Roberts into giving the romance genre a try.

Roberts didn’t seem to be buying it.

Apparently, however, she’s a good sport, because she followed their suggestions and has just emailed the Bitches her book report.

Reader, she loved, loved, loved Lord of the Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. She loved it so much, she went on to read another Chase title, Not Quite a Lady and loved it, too.

Read her email on the Bitches’ site and consider posting in your romance section.

If you need help dealing with the romance skeptics in your life (or if you fall into that category yourself), check their book, Beyond Heaving BosomsThe Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels.

Thanks to the Marin Younker and the wonderful collection development staff’ blog at Sno-Isle PL for the tip!

NYT ‘Newly Released’ Fiction

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Today’s New York Times “Newly Released” list mentions six notable fiction titles. One that appears to be low on librarians’ radars is Vestal McIntyre’s debut novel, Lake Overturn, about a small Idaho town grappling with sinister effects of global warming.  Libraries we checked had five or fewer copies and small reserves.

Lake Overturn was recently praised by the Washington Post for its “vast, intricate lattice of relationships, reminiscent of the novels of Richard Russo.” Although noting “rookie mistakes” like repetitive scenes and extraneous characters, the reviewer declared that McIntyre has “a real talent for characterization and an ability to capture the dramas lurking beneath Eula [Idaho]’s deceptively still waters.”  The Bay Area Reporter also gave it a rave review: “McIntyre confronts homosexuality, class distinctions, racial/ethnic prejudice, religious values, challenges faced by single mothers, death, and erotic desires.”

Publisher: Harper – (2009-05-01)

ISBN-13: 9780061671166

Gillian Flynn’s second novel Dark Places, about the survivor of a famous mass murder who is paid to reinvestigate it by group of true crime enthusiasts, also got a mention. It has been getting strong review coverage as we noted on Tuesday, and is shaping up to be an early summer reading favorite. Libraries we checked have quantities of 12-42 copies, and between 15-83 reserves.

Dark Places: A Novel
Gillian Flynn
Price: $24.00
Hardcover: 368 pages
Publisher: Shaye Areheart Books – (2009-05-05)
ISBN-10: 0307341569
ISBN-13: 9780307341563

The four other new releases mentioned on the Times list are all stocked by the libraries we checked, in quantites of 3 to 40, with reserves in the 50 to 185-copy range.

Sarah Waters’ The Little Strangera period story set in 1940’s Britaiin about a doctor called to visit a haunted house, has the highest number of reserves. That probably reflects the strong following for her previous books, including The Night Watch and Fingersmith, both of which were shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Booker Prize.

Sherlock Holmes, The Movie

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

We don’t know yet if there is a book tie-in, or even if the movie is based on any particular Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, but the trailer sure is fun (to see a larger version, go to the official Sherlock Holmes Movie site).

The movie is scheduled for Dec. 25th.

Anthony Award Nominees

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

It’s great to see Rosemary Harris’s Pushing Up Daisies as one of the nominees for the Anthony Award for Best First Novel (the full list of nominees is available on the Anthony site; winners will be announced at the World Mystery Convnetion in Indianapolis, Oct. 15 to 18).

Rosemary’s been a real friend to libraries, making dozens of library appearances in the past year (just last week, she spoke at the Cuyahoga [OH] PL). She’s such a fan of libraries that she’s talked several of her mystery writing friends into coming to ALA in Chicago; you can find tham at the Sisters in Crime booth.

The second book in her Dirty Business Mystery series came out in February.

Stephen King’s Summer Reading List

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

In the new Entertainment Weekly, (5/22), Stephen King picks seven books for summer reading and one of them is Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens (“as easy to read as any current bestseller” — wonder if that blurb will appear on future editions?).

Another unexpected pick is Jodi Picoult’s newest, Handle With Care,

You men out there who think Ms. Picoult is a chick thing need to get with the program. Her books are an everyone thing, and the current offering — about a little girl whose bones are so brittle that they break almost at a puff of wind — is her best since My Sister’s Keeper

The other five titles, from Michael Robotham’s Shatter to Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, may be less surprising, but it’s fun to read King’s short takes on each one.

Charlaine Harris in the NYT

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Today’s NYT interview with Charlaine Harris confirms that the second season of True Blood , beginning on HBO on June 14th, is based on the second title in Harris’s Southern Vampire series, Living Dead in Dallas. This seems perfectly obvious, since the first season was based on the first book, Dead Until Dark, but we haven’t seen it stated before.

A mass market tie-in edition of Living Dead in Dallas is being released:

Mystery Title from Little, Brown

Librarians have been wondering about an untitled book from Little, Brown with a 150K print run that appeared on B&T’s Fast Facts last month, with the following blurb:

This is a scientific discovery that is currently embargoed until it is announced at a major press conference and a documentary on History channel that will air on 5/20. This discovery will change textbooks, science, and change how we understand the human race.

The promised press conference was held in New York City today, revealing that a 47-million-year-old fossil, that may be the missing link, has been discovered in Germany (thanks to Cindy Orr for pointing this out on The Readers Advisor Online Blog). Called “Ida,” the fossil was actually uncovered in 1984, but, according to the Daily Mail (UK),  “the collector who put her on his wall had no idea of her significance.”

Objecting to the hype surrounding the unveiling, the Guardian tut-tutted about

…the desperate, unseemly scramble to grab some of the action. In a display that was utterly primatal, figures as varied as the mayor of New York and the higher education minister of Norway made sure they were front and centre stage.

The most sublime image was of Michael Bloomberg standing beside Ida’s glass box, his arm around the shoulders of a school girl who was wearing a T-shirt with the TV tie-in logo: “The Link. This changes everything”.

The History Channel will air a documentary, called The Link, on Monday, Memorial Day, at 9 pm ET/PT. There is also a Web site on the find; www.revealingthelink.com
