The Countdown Begins

There’s many reasons that Watchmen, the classic, acclaimed mid-80’s graphic novel went on the Amazon Top Ten bestseller list today (now at #9):

  • The above cover story about the forthcoming movie in Entertainment Weekly (talk about early — the movie doesn’t come out until March 6, 2009!)
  • The movie trailer was released online today. It will preceed showings of The Black Knight, which opens today.
  • Warner released a Watchmen “motion comic” today, available free via iTunes download, exclusively through Entertainment Weekly

What’s a “motion comic”? The Wall Street Journal reports today that Warner is creating a “new kind of comic,” to be distributed electronically and that the move “underscores the importance the studios are attaching to finding new revenue streams as sales shrink from DVDs, a cash cow for more than a decade.” The first chapter is available now. Others will be released each month, leading up to the movie release, helping to build buzz for the movie.

If sales of the graphic novel are any indicator, the effort is working.

With promotion this relentless, you can expect to need more copies. Amazingly, many of you still have the original 1987 compilation. D.C. is planning a new hardcover edition and is reissuing their “Absolute Edition”, but their site says they won’t be available until November.

Meanwhile, it seems the 1995 edition is the only one available:
